It rains heavily for a day or two.

Then you notice a damp patch on an internal wall.

Naturally, you start looking for a leak.

You check the ceiling. Nothing.

You look underneath the nearest window. Nothing obvious.

There's no water dripping down the wall, no burst pipe and perhaps no visible external defect directly opposite the damp patch.

Then, after several dry days, the mark begins to fade.

So where did the water come from?

No.

Rainy weather can also change the internal environment.

  • Walls may become colder

  • Indoor humidity may increase

Where is the building most exposed?

What changed during the rainfall?

Where could water enter?

What construction lies between that point and the internal stain?

Is there a cavity?

Could the cavity be bridged?

Are there openings or structural junctions nearby?

How quickly does the patch appear?

How quickly does it disappear?

Those questions can help turn an apparently random damp patch into a logical moisture pathway.


📸 Take Photographs When The Problem Happens

This is a simple but genuinely useful thing homeowners can do.

If the damp patch only appears during severe weather, it may have largely disappeared by the time a surveyor arrives.

Take photographs.

Ideally record:

  • When it appeared
  • How long it had been raining
  • Whether the rain was particularly heavy
  • Which direction the weather appeared to be coming from
  • Whether the patch became larger
  • How long it took to disappear

That history can provide valuable evidence during the investigation.


❌ Why Simply Replastering The Wall Often Fails

If rainwater is entering somewhere within the building envelope, replacing the internal plaster doesn't stop the water.

The new plaster may initially look perfect.

Then the next period of severe rain arrives.

The moisture pathway is still there.

Not automatically.
