Why Is There Mould In Your Bedroom But Not The Rest Of The House?

You clean the mould from the bedroom wall.

The bathroom is fine.

The kitchen is fine.

The living room is fine.

But a few weeks later, the mould appears in the bedroom again.

💨 We Produce Moisture While We Sleep

You don't need to be showering or cooking to add moisture to the air.

Every time we breathe, we release water vapour.

We also lose moisture through our skin.

Put one or two people into a relatively small bedroom for seven or eight hours with the door and windows closed and that moisture gradually accumulates.

By morning, the bedroom can have a very different humidity level from the rest of the house.


🚪 Closing The Bedroom Door Changes Airflow

Most people sleep with their bedroom door closed.

That reduces air movement between the bedroom and the rest of the property.

If the windows are also closed and there's little background ventilation, moisture generated overnight has fewer opportunities to escape.

This is why the room can feel particularly stuffy or humid first thing in the morning.


🪟 Morning Window Condensation Is A Useful Clue

Do you regularly wake up to water on the inside of your bedroom windows?

That's telling you something about the environment within the room.

Overnight, the amount of water vapour in the air has increased while external temperatures have caused the window and surrounding surfaces to become colder.

Eventually, the surface temperature falls below the dew point and condensation occurs.

The window is simply where you can see it.

There may be other cold surfaces around the room experiencing similarly elevated surface humidity without producing obvious droplets.


🌡️ Why Does The Bedroom Get Colder?

Bedrooms are often intentionally kept cooler than living spaces.

Many people:

  • Turn bedroom radiators down.
  • Switch heating off overnight.
  • Close internal doors.
  • Use spare bedrooms infrequently.

The colder the room becomes, the greater the chance that wall surfaces will reach temperatures at which condensation can occur.

This is especially important on external walls.


🧊 Cold Walls Can Be More Important Than Cold Air

When investigating mould, we're not only interested in the temperature in the middle of the room.

We're interested in the surface temperature of the building fabric.

The room might feel reasonably comfortable at 18°C or 19°C while an external corner or window reveal is significantly colder.

It is the conditions immediately at that surface that determine whether condensation and mould can develop.


🌫️ Understanding The Dew Point

The dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with water vapour.

If a surface falls to or below that temperature, condensation can form.

The higher the moisture content of the air, the higher the dew point becomes.

This means a combination of:

high humidity + cold surfaces = increased condensation risk.

Bedrooms can experience both simultaneously.


🧱 Why Does Mould Grow In External Corners?

External corners are particularly vulnerable because they're influenced by more than one external surface.

They can therefore remain colder than the central area of an internal wall.

Air movement can also be reduced in corners.

This combination can create a localised environment where mould develops despite the rest of the wall looking completely dry.


🌉 Thermal Bridging Can Create Specific Cold Spots

Thermal bridging occurs where a part of the building loses heat more readily than the surrounding construction.

Common locations include:

  • Window reveals

  • External corners

  • Areas with missing or reduced insulation

These surfaces can become noticeably colder than the rest of the room.

If bedroom humidity is elevated overnight, mould may repeatedly appear in exactly these locations.


🛋️ Why Is Mould Growing Behind The Wardrobe?

This is another classic bedroom problem.

Large wardrobes are frequently positioned against external walls.

Unfortunately, this restricts warm room air from circulating across the wall surface.

The wall behind the wardrobe therefore remains colder.

At the same time, moisture can become trapped within the narrow gap.

You may not realise anything is wrong until the wardrobe is moved and a large area of mould is discovered behind it.


🛏️ Beds Can Cause The Same Problem

Beds, headboards and bedside furniture can also restrict airflow.

If a bed is pushed tightly against a cold external wall, conditions behind the headboard may be very different from conditions in the rest of the bedroom.

Leaving a reasonable air gap can help warmer air circulate around the furniture and wall.


🧥 Wardrobes Can Develop Mould Inside Too

Sometimes the wall looks fine but clothing inside a wardrobe develops:

  • A musty smell
  • Mould spots

Again, this can result from poor air circulation combined with elevated humidity and colder surfaces.

Overfilled wardrobes can make the problem worse because air cannot circulate effectively around the contents.


🏠 Why Isn't The Living Room Mouldy?

Compare the bedroom with your living room.

The living room may have:

  • More consistent heating
  • Doors opening regularly
  • Greater air movement
  • Fewer hours with several people in a closed room

The two rooms are therefore operating under completely different environmental conditions.

So mould affecting only the bedroom doesn't necessarily mean there's a mysterious leak within that room.


🚿 The Moisture Might Not All Come From The Bedroom

Moisture moves around a property.

Water vapour generated through:

  • Showering
  • Bathing
  • Drying washing indoors

can migrate through the house.

It may then condense on the coldest available surfaces.

This means the source of the moisture and the location where mould develops don't necessarily have to be the same place.


👕 Drying Clothes In The Bedroom Can Make Things Worse

Drying washing indoors releases the moisture contained within the clothes back into the surrounding air.

If this takes place in a bedroom with limited ventilation, humidity can increase significantly.

That additional moisture must eventually go somewhere.

Without sufficient ventilation, it may condense against colder parts of the building fabric.


🍄 Why Does Black Mould Keep Coming Back After Cleaning?

Cleaning removes the visible mould.

It doesn't necessarily change the environment that allowed it to grow.

If the room still has:
