Damp Specialists in Derbyshire
Weather Wise Solutions Limited are damp, mould and condensation specialists based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Derbyshire is one of the six areas we cover, from Derby in the south to Chesterfield in the north-east and Buxton and Glossop in the High Peak. We find out why a home is damp before recommending anything, and our damp surveys are free.
Damp across Derbyshire
Derbyshire has some of the widest variety of housing of any county we cover. The south and east, around Derby and Chesterfield, are mostly brick: Victorian terraces, homes built for mill, railway and mining workers, inter-war semis and large post-war estates. The north and west run up into the Peak District, where older homes are often built of local stone and stand high up in some of the wettest, windiest weather in England. The same damp patch can have a very different cause in a Derby terrace and a Buxton stone cottage, so the survey always starts with the house itself.
Brick homes in the south and east
In solid-walled terraces we often find low-level damp from a failed or bridged damp proof course, paths and soil built up against the wall, or old plaster loaded with salts. In cavity-walled homes from the 1930s onwards, condensation and black mould are far more common than rising damp, especially after new windows and draught-proofing. Wet or bridged cavity wall insulation is another cause we check for.
Stone homes in the Peak District
Thick stone walls cope with rain by soaking it up and drying out again. Hard cement pointing, render or modern paint can stop that drying, and then the water finds its way inside. Exposed chimneys, long terraced roofs and houses built into slopes add their own problems, and cold walls through long winters make condensation and mould common.

What we treat
- Rising damp: confirmed with readings and an outside check before any treatment. Every damp proof course we fit comes with a 20-year insurance-backed guarantee. See rising damp.
- Penetrating damp: stopped at the outside with repointing, gutter repairs or sealing junctions. See penetrating damp.
- Condensation and black mould: dealt with by reducing moisture and improving ventilation, including positive input ventilation units. See condensation and mould.
- Damp cellars: tanked with a tanking system and a suitable plaster. We're a fully approved Remmers installer, so our tanking is covered by a Remmers manufacturer guarantee. See cellar and basement waterproofing.
- Timber decay: wet rot, dry rot and woodworm. See dry rot, wet rot and woodworm.
Surveys and prices
We ask where the damp is and when it's worst, take moisture readings inside and look at the outside of the house. You get a plain explanation on the day and a written quote if work is needed, and if the problem is really a roof or plumbing job we say so. Most surveys are free. The paid services are the Home Buyer Quote at £349, the Full Damp & Timber Report at £449 and the Ventilation Inspection & Report at £349. For rented homes we arrange the visit with the landlord or their letting agent; our landlord surveys page explains more.
Landlords in Derbyshire
Private landlords in Derbyshire have two dates to plan for. The new landlord register, where each rented home has to be recorded, opens in the East Midlands on 15 February 2027, two months after the West Midlands. The government is also consulting until mid-December 2026 on extending Awaab's Law, which sets deadlines for dealing with damp and mould, to private rented homes; nothing about its scope or start date is decided yet. Either way, a written record of when damp was reported, what caused it and what was done to fix it is worth having. We carry out damp and mould surveys for landlords and letting agents across the county, arranged with the tenant through the landlord or agent.

Questions about damp in Derbyshire
Do you cover the whole of Derbyshire?
Derbyshire is one of our six service areas. Call us with your postcode and we'll confirm a survey date.
Is the survey really free?
Yes, for homeowners and landlords. Only the Home Buyer Quote, the Full Damp & Timber Report and the Ventilation Inspection & Report are paid.
Do stone houses need different damp treatment?
Often, yes. Stone walls need to dry out, so sealing them can make damp worse. We'll recommend repairs that suit the wall.
