Damp Specialists in North Wales
Weather Wise Solutions Limited are damp, mould and condensation specialists based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and North Wales is one of the six areas we cover, from Deeside and Mold in Flintshire to Rhyl, Prestatyn and the Vale of Clwyd in Denbighshire. We find the cause of the damp before suggesting any work, and our damp surveys are free.
Why homes in North Wales get damp
North Wales has some of the most varied housing we see. Along the coast, Rhyl and Prestatyn grew as seaside resorts, with Victorian and Edwardian terraces and guest houses that face straight into the weather. Inland, older homes in villages and market towns are often built of local stone with slate roofs, and many sit on hillsides. Deeside and the Flintshire towns grew with industry and have large numbers of terraces and post-war estates, and newer housing has spread around all of them. Rain off the hills and wind off the sea mean damp is common, but the cause changes from one house to the next.
Coastal terraces and older town houses
Solid-walled houses near the coast take a battering from wind-driven rain. Worn pointing, cracked render, failed window seals and blocked gutters let water into the wall, and it shows inside as patches that come and go with the weather. Bay windows, parapets and chimney stacks on the old resort terraces are frequent weak points.
Stone cottages and hillside homes
Stone walls are built to take in some rain and dry out again. Cement pointing, cement render or plastic paint can stop that, trapping moisture inside the wall. Where a cottage is built into a slope, the ground against the back wall adds another source of damp. In these homes we usually look for ways to help the wall dry rather than to seal it.
Estates and newer homes
Cavity-walled houses from the 1950s onwards rarely have true rising damp. Condensation and black mould are far more common, particularly after new windows and draught-proofing, and wet cavity wall insulation can cause damp on the inside of exposed walls.
Our North Wales town pages

What we treat
- Penetrating damp: rain through stonework, brickwork, pointing, render and chimneys, stopped from the outside. See penetrating damp.
- Condensation and black mould: dealt with by reducing moisture and improving ventilation, including positive input ventilation units. See condensation and mould.
- Rising damp: confirmed with readings and an outside check before any treatment. Every damp proof course we fit comes with a 20-year insurance-backed guarantee. See rising damp.
- Damp cellars and below-ground walls: tanked with a tanking system and a suitable plaster. We're a fully approved Remmers installer, so our tanking is covered by a Remmers manufacturer guarantee. See cellar and basement waterproofing.
- Timber decay: wet rot and dry rot in floors, joists and window frames. See dry rot and wet rot.
Surveys and prices
We ask where the damp is, when it's worst and what's changed in the house, then take moisture readings and look at the outside: walls, pointing, render, gutters, chimney and ground levels. You get a straight explanation on the day and a written quote if work is needed. If the problem is a roof or plumbing job, we'll say so. Most surveys are free. The paid services are the Home Buyer Quote at £349, the Full Damp & Timber Report at £449 and the Ventilation Inspection & Report at £349.
Landlords in North Wales
Wales has its own law on renting. The landlord register and Awaab's Law being brought in for England don't apply here; Welsh landlords work under the Renting Homes (Wales) Act, which requires rented homes to be fit to live in, and damp and mould count towards that. Whatever the rules, a survey that finds the cause and a record of the work done are worth having. For rented homes we arrange the visit with the landlord or their letting agent; our landlord surveys page explains more.

Questions about damp in North Wales
Do you really come out to North Wales from Newcastle-under-Lyme?
Yes. North Wales is one of our six service areas, and the survey is free.
My stone cottage has damp walls. Does it need a damp proof course?
Not always. In stone walls the cause is often rain getting in or cement pointing and render stopping the wall drying out. We check before recommending anything.
Why are the walls damp in my seaside flat?
It may be wind-driven rain getting in, condensation inside, or both. Readings and a look at the outside walls tell them apart.
Is the survey really free?
Yes, for homeowners and landlords. Only the Home Buyer Quote, the Full Damp & Timber Report and the Ventilation Inspection & Report are paid.
