Damp Specialists in Merseyside
Weather Wise Solutions Limited are damp, mould and condensation specialists based in Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Merseyside is one of the six areas we cover: Liverpool, the Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley and Sefton up to Southport. We work out why a home is damp before recommending anything, and our damp surveys are free.
Why homes in Merseyside get damp
Merseyside sits on the coast, facing weather off the Irish Sea, so wind-driven rain is part of life for many of its homes. Liverpool's inner areas are full of Victorian and Edwardian terraces, many with cellars, and grander villas line the parks and the older suburbs. Across the river, Birkenhead, Oxton and Wallasey have streets of terraces and Victorian houses, with older buildings in local red sandstone, while the seaside towns of New Brighton, Hoylake and West Kirby take the full force of the wind. Kirkby, Huyton and other towns grew fast after the war with large estates. Each type of home has its own weak spots.
Exposed walls on the coast
On the Wirral peninsula and along the Sefton coast, the side of the house facing the sea or the prevailing wind gets soaked far more often than the rest. Rain driven into old brickwork, sandstone, worn pointing or cracked render finds its way to the plaster inside, and window reveals and chimney stacks are frequent entry points. We look at which walls are wet and which way they face, because that usually points straight at the cause.
Terraces and cellars
Many older terraced houses in Liverpool, Bootle and Birkenhead have solid walls and cellars. Below-ground walls with earth against them often let damp through, and a failed or bridged damp proof course shows up low on the ground-floor walls. Old plaster loaded with salts can keep a wall looking damp long after the cause has been fixed.
Post-war estates and newer homes
Cavity-walled homes from the 1950s onwards rarely suffer real rising damp, but condensation and black mould are very common, especially after new windows and draught-proofing. Wet or bridged cavity wall insulation can also cause damp patches on the inside of outside walls, and on exposed sites it's one of the first things we check.

What we treat
- Penetrating damp: wind-driven rain through brickwork, sandstone, pointing, render and chimneys, stopped from the outside. See penetrating damp.
- Rising damp: confirmed with readings and an outside check before treatment. Every damp proof course we fit comes with a 20-year insurance-backed guarantee. See rising damp.
- Condensation and black mould: cut by reducing moisture and improving ventilation, including positive input ventilation units. See condensation and mould.
- Damp cellars: tanked with a tanking system and a suitable plaster. We're a fully approved Remmers installer, so our tanking is covered by a Remmers manufacturer guarantee. See cellar and basement waterproofing.
- Timber decay: wet rot, dry rot and woodworm. See wet rot and woodworm.
Surveys and prices
We ask where the damp shows and when it's worst, take moisture readings inside and look at the outside: walls, pointing, render, gutters and ground levels. You get a plain explanation on the day and a written quote if work is needed, and if the problem is a roofing or plumbing job we tell you. Most surveys are free. The paid services are the Home Buyer Quote at £349, the Full Damp & Timber Report at £449 and the Ventilation Inspection & Report at £349. Our Merseyside survey page has more on booking.
Landlords in Merseyside
The landlord register opens in the North West on 15 May 2027, and each rented home will need to be recorded. The government is also consulting until mid-December 2026 on bringing Awaab's Law, which sets deadlines for fixing damp and mould, to private rented homes; its scope and start date aren't decided. Keeping a record of when damp was reported, what caused it and what was done is sensible either way. See our landlord surveys page; for rented homes we arrange the visit with the landlord or their letting agent.

Questions about damp in Merseyside
Do you cover the Wirral as well as Liverpool?
Yes. We cover the whole of Merseyside, including every part of the Wirral.
Why is only one wall of my house damp?
On the coast it's often the wall that faces the wind and rain. We check the outside of that wall first: pointing, render, gutters and window seals.
Should I paint my outside walls to keep the rain out?
Not with anything that stops the wall breathing, as it can trap water inside. Repairs to pointing and render, or a breathable masonry protection, are usually better. We'll tell you which suits your wall.
Is the survey really free?
Yes, for homeowners and landlords. Only the Home Buyer Quote, the Full Damp & Timber Report and the Ventilation Inspection & Report are paid.
